Baths of Diocletian – 3D Mapping – Mediterraneo
Project Summary
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs held an event at the iconic Roman site, the Baths of Diocletian, to premiere their new cultural project, Mediterraneo. We were commissioned to realize a 3D video mapping titled Italy, Culture, and Mediterranean.
Brief
Our lab concepted, oversaw, and executed both the architectural elements of the stages as well as original creative content for the 3D projection mapping. This involved closely collaborating with the D.G.S.P. and international groups to execute two diverse video pieces — one being an animated official logo reveal and the other, a dynamic educational video that was the primary focus of the event.
The educational video explored the history of mediterranean cultures through a technically innovative approach that presented classical historical themes in contemporary ways. The sheer size of the thermal complex (an immense structure of almost 20m x 50m) beautifully and stoically housed the installations. In many instances, animations posed optical illusions that resembled the physical surroundings — a living dimension at times feeling as though it was emerging from the brick walls of the ancient space.
Impact
In addition to our work on the project, Mediterraneo involved the contributions and performances of artists from diverse disciplines who all created a piece that interpreted the idea of what it means to be Mediteranean.
Over 200 collaborators participated in this event, including poets, authors, actors, artists, photographers, and musicians. Names include the Orchestra of Piazza di Vittorio, Accademia Chigiana, the Young Musicians European Orchestra, Compagnia by Danza Zappalà, singer/songwriter Eugenio Bennato, and actress Iaia Forte. Interior Minister and Vice-President of the Council of Government Affairs, Angelino Alfano, was also in attendance.
