Moscow Art Vision – Official Selection
Project Summary
Our lab produced two different architectural mapping projects that were official selections of The International Light Festival in Moscow, Art Vision. We were one of only 10 groups in the world to be included in the “Modern” category which showed at the Maly Theater and “Classic” category that was projected on the facade of the Bolshoi theatre. We originally created all imagery and sound.
Approach
The “Modern” mapping project titled “The Line” was an exploration of the significance of the line. We saw the line as a universal gesture, that progressed through time and evolved through diverse connections that generated new forms. The line was portrayed not only as a symbol, but a graphic action teetering between reality and fantasy. The rational human mind uses lines to describe and calculate geometry and continues to use it in technical drawings in digital formats such as vectors. The irrational dimension in people uses lines to describe emotions through art. In the same manner, we use a system of lines in our alphabet for writing which traces our existence.
The “Classic” mapping project titled “Fistful of Minutes” honored Sergio Leone, particularly the “Dollars Trilogy.” We explored the mythology of masks and archetypes as a great spectacle.
Impact
The live mapping performances were viewed live by over 60,000 people and additionally broadcast on television.
