TOSCA – Multimedia Scenography
Project Summary
We designed and realized all digital animated scenography for the Romanian National Opera’s production of Tosca.
Brief
To commemorate their 150th anniversary, the Romanian National Opera in Craiova premiered a special production of Tosca in Europe’s largest outdoor public garden, Nicolae Romanescu Park. The client wanted to merge impactful digital scenography with a classical production. This multimedia scenography was to interact with the music and stage choreography for the entire duration of the opera’s three acts: The Church of St. Andrea Della Valle, The Palazzo Farnese, and The Castel Sant’Angelo. The cast included opera stars Ramón Vargas, Joanna Parisi, and Alberto Gazale.
Approach
Our lab closely collaborated with musical director, Walter Attanasi, opera director, Antoniu Zamfir, and multimedia branding agency, Altair Media. Our aim was to reinterpret Tosca through a technologically sophisticated virtual reality that both enhanced and enriched the musical experience. Our lab handled the end-to-end production of the 3D digital scenography in the entire show from conceptualization to final execution and on-location management.
Capabilities
Designing for a show in Nicolae Romanescu Park required providing creative and technical solutions to accommodate the inclusion of a large scale physical outdoor bridge, tower, and lake in the production. We created sophisticated hardware and software to realize the full breadth of the show. The choreography and movement of the projections were animated to perfectly sync with the gestures of the performers and musicians in real time.
